This year’s New Orleans Bowl features a Middle Tennessee State team looking for back-to-back bowl wins, and Appalachian State is hoping to continue what’s been a tremendous start to their time in FBS, as the Mountaineers have won a bowl game in their first three seasons at the top subdivision in college football.

The college football bowl season gets underway the first Saturday after the Army Navy Game and two weeks after the conference championships. One of the favorite opening day bowl games has become the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Adding to the excitement is this year’s matchup of the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

This is just the fourth season of division one football for Appalachian State after they were a 1AA power for many years. This will be the fourth consecutive bowl appearance in four years as a D1 program. The Mountaineers have won all three of their previous bowl games including a 34-0 victory over Toledo last year. Head coach Scott Satterfield played quarterback for the Mountaineers and has led the program since 2013.

Middle Tennessee is also making their fourth consecutive bowl appearance and was the winner of the Camellia Bowl last year 35-30 over Arkansas State. Head coach Rick Stockstill is in his 13th season leading the program. This will be the Blue Raiders eighth bowl game under Stockstill.

The New R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl has been played in the New Orleans Superdome since 2001 and has current conference tie-ins with the Sun Belt and Conference USA. R+L Carriers has been the sponsor of this bowl since 2006. In most cases the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl ends up as one of the highest scoring bowls each year.
